Cal Tech Pentathlon - By Coach Steve Hyde The Cal Tech Pentathlon is the place to be for swimmers who feel the need for speed. This event grows larger and faster every year and this year was no exception. Two hundred and thirty-eight swimmers representing thirty-two teams made the trek to Pasadena to participate in this five event drag race. CONGRATULATIONS on a fantastic Winter Championship Meet on Saturday January 28, at El Camino College in Torrance. SOBA earned the most points at the SCAA Winter Championship Meet, coming in first in Division I and winning the entire meet, winning a huge trophy. Each and every swimmer who participated in the SCAA Winter Champs Meet scored points for the team – this was truly a TEAM EFFORT! Congratulations to our friend and South Bay Swim Team teammate, Ricardo Monroy! Ricardo is the recipient of the Los Angeles County Lifeguard's 2011 Distinguished Service Award. Ricardo was honored at the Medal of Valor Dinner on July 28. We are so proud of you, Ricardo! Regional Update Members of South Bay (SOBA) Masters swim team earned a 5thplace finish in The Southern Pacific Master Association Swimming Championship held at the La Mirada Slash Aquatic Center on May 13, 14, and 15th. Opened in 2007, Splash is one of the biggest and prettiest facilities I have ever seen and even includes an aquatic theme park! Caltech Pentathlon – SOBA Success! By Steve Hyde We had a good turnout at the Caltech Penthlon and some great swims. The pentathlon consists of 50 Yard swims in each stroke, capped off with a 100 Yard Individual Medley. Needless to say, this meet attracts sprinters, and this year was no exception.
